Appointeeship - FAQ's

Can an appointee reside overseas?

The rationale behind making someone an appointee is that they should have regular contact with the individual and their support network. This may become problematic when one party lives overseas. The matter of collaboration between parties is one often factored into the appointeeship process. Discussion with the person’s support network can enable the appointee to carry out the role more efficiently, maintaining a transparent approach.

There are two possible outcomes if a client with an existing appointee moves overseas. If the DWP determines that there are no presenting issues, and the appointee agrees to retain their role, then the service provision can continue.

If the appointee moves abroad, it may be more suitable to consider the involvement of a new appointee. Alternatives should be sought after in this instance, to avoid any related issues. The individual’s wellbeing should be the priority throughout the appointeeship process. Their existing support network (including the appointee) should therefore look for someone to take over the role. This is to avoid significant interruption to the care they receive.
