What form do I need to become a DWP appointee, and what is the process?
To become an appointee for another person in the UK, you must provide the relevant forms and documentation to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Below is an outline of what you need to know:
Steps to becoming a DWP appointee
- Contact the DWP – To begin the appointeeship process, you should contact the DWP by letter or phone with your enquiry. They will inform you whether the individual could be eligible for the service.
- Attend an Interview – The DWP will arrange an interview between you, the person you want to help, and one of their ‘Visiting Officers’. During this interview, they will assess the situation, explain the responsibilities, and determine your suitability for the role.
- Fill Out An Application Form – If the Visiting Officer approves of the request, they will provide you with a BF56 application form. You are required to fill this in with the relevant details to formalise your role.
- Await a Decision – Once the DWP have processed your application, they will confirm their approval with a BF57 form. This will be sent out to you, at which point your authority begins.
- Manage Your Duties Responsibly – As an appointee, you’ll be responsible for handling all benefit-related matters for the person. This includes filling out forms, providing updates to the DWP, and using the benefits in the person’s best interest.
Key Responsibilities as an Appointee
- Open a separate appointee bank account.
- Act in the best interest of the individual.
- Inform the DWP of any changes in the person’s circumstances (e.g. hospitalisation or change of address).
- Keep records of how benefits are used.
