Power of Attorney - FAQ's

How many powers of attorney are there in the UK?

As of March 2025, there were over eight million registered powers of attorney in the UK, as per the Office of The Public Guardian’s (OPG) register. This figure reflects the cumulative totals of all registrations to date.

In the 2024-25 financial year, the OPG received approximately 1.37 million applications to register powers of attorney. This marked a significant increase from the previous year’s 1.07 million applications. The surge can be primarily attributed to new streamlined online application processes. By providing a more efficient registration service, this allows for a far more expedited process when compared to previous years.

Notwithstanding the increased volume of applications, the OPG have made strides in reducing their processing times. Although they continue to exceed their pre-pandemic target, significant reductions have been made to the number of working days required for registration and dispatch.

The growing number of registered powers of attorney in the UK indicates a clear significance of the service. As a legal instrument, the role can be invaluable when planning for future financial and physical health. This becomes especially notable in the context of an aging population, with a growing awareness of incapacitating conditions.

Despite all of this, the majority of people in the UK over the age of 55 do not have a power of attorney in place. This is largely due to a lack of awareness and resources. Through our tailored LPA bank accounts, we can assist with the money management duties that the role requires. This not only ensures financial security for clients but is a key indicator that the role is being carried out efficiently.
