Can an appointee be nominated on a temporary basis?
The circumstances that an individual is under usually determine whether appointeeship can be granted on a temporary or permanent basis. Typically, the DWP puts appointees in place for those with reduced decision-making capacity. This therefore applies to those affected by a period of short-term illness, or injury following an accident.
The DWP requires that all appointees keep them informed of circumstantial changes, regardless of the longevity of the role. Under temporary appointeeship, these changes commonly include the person’s accommodation (i.e. hospitalisation), and their capacity levels as the situation develops. Appointees must advise the DWP of changes as soon as possible, as these can impact a person’s benefit entitlement.
These parties can then ensure that clients experience minimal hardship during this time, by providing temporary financial oversight. Appointees must also make decisions of this nature in a timely manner, prioritising the person’s best interests at all times.
